In
most cases this condition is the result of destruction
of the supporting structure, the tissue, connective
fibers, and bone, as in periodontal disease. The exception
is when the tooth has under gone trauma from a blow,
malocclusion or some other destabilizing event.

Temporary
Treatment for a Lose Tooth
|
|
Generally, when the tooth has become
mobile as a result of periodontal disease the long term
treatment is dependent upon the degree of mobility and
the amount of bone loss.
The mobility must be evaluated by a dentist to determine
if other factors such as traumatic occlusion (the bite
is applying excessive force on the tooth), orthodontic
movement with root resorption or other conditions that
may be involved. The best way to achieve temporary relief
from pain until a dentist can be
seen is not to bite down on the tooth. This at times can
be difficult because of
the natural movement (occlusion) between opposing teeth.
-
Place a cotton gauze on the opposite side of the mouth
so that the teeth on the painful side don't touch.
Bite down gently and hold in place.
Caution: Do not fall asleep with the gauze in your
mouth.
- Try
one of the common analgesics such as ibuprofen or
acetaminophen. Contact a dentist immediately for an
appointment.
